See How the Warming + Grounding Mattress Works

The U501V has two independent connections: one for active underbody warming and one for return electrode functionality. This video shows the basic setup, cable connections, patient positioning, and compatibility checkpoints before use.

Two Functions. One Mattress.

Designed with veterinarians in mind, the U501V simplifies your setup by combining safe, conductive warming with a built-in capacitive return electrode.

No dedicated shave site. No adhesive return electrode pad. One reusable surface underneath the patient.

Air-Free Underbody Warming

U501V Veterinary Air-Free Warming Diagram

Low-voltage DC current flows through the ThermAssure™ conductive fabric, generating uniform heat across the patient-facing surface.

The U501V connects to the WC77V Controller through the blue A112 Mattress Cable and reaches setpoint from room temperature in less than 10 minutes.

The WC77V continuously monitors the connected warming device and stops warming if readings move outside safe operating parameters.

Radiolucent heater fabric supports X-ray use. Position the busbars and sensor area outside the imaging field when possible.

Capacitive Return Electrode

U501 Veterinary Return Electrode Diagram

The large-surface mattress acts as a neutral electrode, safely collecting monopolar ESU current and returning it to the generator. No adhesives or extra preparation.

Connects via the green A136 cable. Compatible with single or dual ESU setups (use A137 Y-cable for dual generators). May require adapter cable.

Capacitive return electrode technology has been used safely in over 100 million human surgical procedures.

Skip the Shave. Skip the Sticky Pad.

Traditional adhesive return electrodes require a suitable placement site and may require clipping or shaving fur to achieve appropriate pad contact.

With the U501V, the patient lies directly over a large-area capacitive return electrode. For compatible patients and ESU setups, there is no dedicated return-electrode shave site and no adhesive pad to apply or remove.

No Dedicated Shave Site

Less patient preparation before surgery and no fur removal solely for return electrode placement.

No Adhesive Return Pad

No adhesive pad placement, removal, or disposal between cases.

One Underbody Device

The same mattress provides active warming and return electrode functionality.

A Large-Surface Return Path Under the Patient

During monopolar electrosurgery, high-frequency current travels from the active electrode through the patient and must return to the electrosurgical generator.

Instead of collecting that current through a small adhesive return electrode attached to the skin, the U501V uses the large surface underneath the patient as a capacitive return electrode.

Adequate patient contact with the mattress is essential for effective capacitive coupling.

Return Electrode Use by Patient Weight

Safe capacitive coupling requires at least 4 nanofarads of capacitance — approximately 120 cm² of patient-body contact on the mattress surface. Patient weight is a practical guide, but actual body contact should always be assessed. Verify before each procedure.

ZonePatient WeightExpected Pad ContactRecommendation
Green≥ 5 kg (≥ 11 lb)Torso + limbs cover ≥ 65% of padProceed as normal
Yellow2–5 kg (4.4–11 lb)Aim for ≥ 50% coverage; spread all limbsUse low-to-moderate ESU power. If cutting feels weak — improve contact before raising power.
Red< 2 kg (< 4.4 lb)Contact area < ~120 cm²Do not use U501V as return electrode. Switch to adhesive pad or bipolar technique.

Ready in Three Steps

1

Position the Mattress

Position the U501V on the surgical table with appropriate non-conductive layer between the mattress and any metal surface. Place a thin barrier (under 0.8 mm — a drape or bed sheet) between the mattress and patient. Maximize patient contact: spread all limbs and tail across the surface.

2

Connect Warming

Align the red dots and push the blue A112 cable into the mattress connector, then into a blue port on the WC77V controller. Listen for the beep — it confirms the safety monitoring system is active.

3

Connect to ESU

Connect the green A136 cable from the mattress to your ESU return electrode port. If your ESU uses CQM, REM, NEM, or Nessy monitoring, the A138 adapter may be required. Power on and confirm the ESU recognizes the return electrode.

Cables and Adapters

For active warming, the U501V connects to the WC77V Temperature Management Controller using the A112 Mattress Cable. For return electrode use, the U501V connects to a compatible monopolar electrosurgical generator using the A136 Return Electrode Cable. Both functions can operate simultaneously, or the return electrode can be used independently without the WC77V controller.

The A17 Y-Cable and A138 Adapter may be required depending on your ESU configuration.

Simpler Setup. Less Waste. No Shaving.

No Shaving

No sticky pads, no skin prep, no burn risk from loose adhesive contact.

Reusable for 2 years

One U501V replaces over 2,000 single-use return electrode pads across its 24-month lifespan based on four procedures per day. Lower per-procedure cost, dramatically less disposable waste.

85.7% normothermia

Iowa State University RCT (Ayers and Riedesel, n=28) showed 85.7% normothermia with HotDog conductive warming above and below vs. 14.3% with forced-air above the patient and circulating water below.

One Operating Room setup

One device connects to both the WC77V and your ESU simultaneously. Less table clutter, faster patient positioning, fewer cables to manage between cases.

Built-in Safety Monitoring

The WC77V continuously monitors the mattress and stops operation if patient warming functionality leaves safe parameters. Error codes E1, E2, E4, and E8 identify specific issues and guide resolution. Refer to your electrosurgical generator IFU for related safety features.

Water-resistant and Easy to Clean

Fully sealed seams and a water-resistant surface make routine wipe-downs possible in under 30 seconds. Compatible with approved disinfectants. Follow the disinfectant manufacturer’s required contact time and drying instructions.

One Mattress. Hundreds of Procedures.

Every adhesive return electrode is used once and discarded.

The U501V is reusable until its labeled expiration date, allowing the same return electrode surface to support repeated procedures while also providing active patient warming.

A reusable return electrode means fewer disposable adhesive pads entering the waste stream after every monopolar electrosurgery procedure.

HotDog U501V warming and grounding mattress compared with 2,080 disposable forced-air underbody warming blankets and 2,080 patient return electrodes.

Illustrative two-year comparison based on four procedures per day, five days per week, and 52 weeks per year, assuming one disposable return electrode and one forced-air underbody warming blanket per procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need the A138 REM adapter?

Only if your ESU uses Contact Quality Monitoring (CQM), Return Electrode Monitoring (REM), NEM, or Nessy. Check your ESU manual if unsure. The A138 connects between the A136 cable and the ESU port. If running two generators with CQM/REM, you’ll need two A138 adapters.

Can I use the U501V with a WC71V single-port controller?

No. The U501V requires the WC77V multiport controller. Using a WC71V is not supported and could cause the controller to malfunction. The WC77V is the only approved controller for this device.

What is the minimum patient size?

The U501V is indicated for patients weighing at least 4.4 lb (2 kg). For patients between 2–5 kg (yellow zone), use low-to-moderate ESU power and maximize limb spread. For patients under 2 kg, the mattress cannot provide sufficient pad contact for safe capacitive coupling — use a traditional adhesive return pad or bipolar technique instead.

Can it connect to two ESUs at once?

Yes, using the A137 Dual Generator “Y” Cable. Connect each leg to its respective ESU after the Y-split. If both generators use CQM/REM monitoring, you’ll need one A138 adapter per generator leg. Secure any unused Y-leg off the floor to avoid interference.

How long does the U501V last, and how do I know when it expires?

The U501V expires 2 years from ship date. The expiration date is printed on the short blue cable extending from the mattress. Check this date before each use. As the conductive fabric oxidizes over time, it increases resistance and reduces heating performance — the controller will trigger E2 errors once the mattress degrades past the functional threshold.

Can the U501V be used during X-rays?

Yes — the heater fabric is radiolucent. However, the parallel busbars along the long edges and the temperature sensor area are radio-opaque and will appear in images. Position the mattress so these areas fall outside the imaging field.

Which ESU generators are compatible?

The U501V has been tested and confirmed compatible with the Conmed Sabre 2400 and ERBE ICC 350. It meets IEC 60601-2-2 requirements and works with most isolated monopolar ESUs operating at 300–600 kHz. Contact us at (866) 484-3505 with your specific ESU model for confirmation. Do not use with RF ablation generators or non-isolated ESUs.

How do I clean the U501V?

Wipe with diluted alcohol, diluted bleach, diluted chlorhexidine, ammonia-based, or hospital-grade low/intermediate-level disinfectants. Do not use hydrogen peroxide-based cleaners — they degrade the conductive fabric. Never submerge, autoclave, or launder the mattress. Avoid spraying cleaning solution into the cable connectors or ports.
